Sports are they important?
« on: December 08, 2007, 09:03:43 AM »
Why do people feel sports are so important?  People will pay Big money to watch a game or a wresting or boxing match and Nascar is making more money than the President.  Why is this and who controls it?

Sports are good for kids in school. It teaches them values like teamwork, accountability, and dealing with defeat along with the joy of winning. If only the parents could handle losing a little better.

The big money pro sports get very little of my money. As long as people pay crazy prices to watch they'll keep putting it out there and charging the max that the market will stand. I noticed a lot of empty seats at the last truck race even though a very close battle for the points championship was going to be settled. I'm sure nascar wasn't happy with the empty seats.

The main reason people think sports are important nowadays is to keep kids out of trouble, possibly disinterested in drugs, and off the streets. Kids  have too much free time on their hands.  Sports keep them busy.   The problem is--once kids reach middle school or high school they no longer like sports because they realilze they suck at them. It's sad for these kids as there aren't many good activities to keep them busy and out of harm's way.

Our boys learned to enjoy the pureness of competition without mean spirit when winning or losing.    They practiced hard, played hard and learned something from winning and losing.

Unfortunately many of todays coaches are trying to relive their lack of ability through their children and take it way too serious. *no&

Don't get me wrong.....they wanted to win, played to win; but found a way to deal with loss by knowing that they did the best they could.

Did the coaches yell and scream at them when they were little?  Talk to them as if they were dirt if they lost?

No,  their Dad was pretty much around most practices--not coaching, but around.   Of course,  we are talking about late-70's  when they were in Midget/Little League sports; it was a simpler time.   When they got to high school , the coach's expectations became more of a priority.

The bottom line was that they played because they wanted to...not for us, not for peer pressure.   It was a part of their lives, a big part in making them the men they are today.

I personally think with the right coach children can learn alot from sports.  It is just sometimes as with everything  some of the coaches take it too far. *no&

For the kids who aren't into sports, Band and Key Club are both good activities to keep kids busy and help them with life lessons. It really saddens me to see the low number of kids in the marching bands at some of our local schools. Bluefield is a good example, all the focus seems to be on sports with such a small band to play at their games.

But...what a band Bluefield has.

C'mon now, I was being serious. Why is it that Bluefield can field such sport teams and show so little interest in band? After all, when it's all said and done which do you think has more kids who go on and become college grads?

Bad example. I played football for BHS and am a college grad.

Whew, do I agree with you on the parents. I have coached soccer for 5-6 years now and have had a few teams that were undefeated. When it comes time to play a team for the 2nd time in a season, and they know you still haven't lost, it gets a bit intense!!

I always tried to let the kids have fun, but they knew they were in trouble if there was any horseplay.
