Coaching has a lot to do with how the children and teens play.  If you have a coach that respects the players and the game, then the players are more likely to do their best for themself and their coach.

BMS has had a crappy soccer team for many years now and for some reason, when they they get to the high school, they shape up and start winning.

Explain that one to me.  It is not lack of talent from the players.

But...what a band Bluefield has.

C'mon now, I was being serious. Why is it that Bluefield can field such sport teams and show so little interest in band? After all, when it's all said and done which do you think has more kids who go on and become college grads?

Bad example. I played football for BHS and am a college grad.

It's not a bad example at all. I'm not knocking sports, I think it's a wonderful thing for kids. I also realize that some of the kids who play sports aren't talented enough to get a sports scholarship also go on and get a degree. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that many of the top students in the school are also in the band. If I were a betting man I'd wager that you have a much higher college grad rate of kids who were in the band compared to kids who were only in sports, especially if you take out the sports scholarships. Another way of putting it is a larger percent of band members get academic scholarships than athletes. That may not be true for all schools, but I bet it's true for all the schools that put an emphasis on their band.

I agree with you there.  The band does have a lot of dedicated students.  They care more about their grades than most students on the football team.  It is also true of those students on the Soccer team.  In Bluefield High, there were like 6 or 7 students that were from the boys soccer team that got National Honor Society.  If I am not mistaken, there were none from the Football team.  It is really sad.

Now that is not saying that there are not some dedicated Football players on the team,  because there are.  I am sure some of those players will end up going to college and making something of themself.

All this goes back to my original question, why do so many schools put such little emphasis on the band program? Don't you think it would be good to attract more kids into a program with the most dedicated students as the peers? Common sense tells us that can be enough to get a kid who has the ability to achieve inspired to do their best instead of coasting along. Sadly, I think a big part of the lack of interest from some schools is the fact that a good band won't fill the grandstands at $5 a head.

Thanks, Graybeard!

Besides, it has been shown that an education in music makes you smarter. (I speak from experience on that.  *devilish* )

Schools will always put more focus on the sports that make them more money.  Football and Basketball.

I only speak of what I know.  Soccer and Band both have very smart players.  Band does not make the school much money and Soccer, in the past, has not made schools much money.  So they do not care about them.

As much as I hate it,  it is a money issue.

Interesting subject. I am not anti-sports, but, in defense of of music and those kids in the band:

I recently bought but haven't yet read a book published last year: THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC, The Science of a Human Obsession, by Daniel J. Levitin, who is described as a "rocker- turned-neuroscientist."

The book is a New York Times Bestseller, a Los Angeles Times Book Prizes Finalist, a Scientific American Book Club Selection, and carries an endorsement of "Endlessly stimulating" by Oliver Sacks, M.D, professor of Clinical Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

This is from the jacket blurb: "Taking on prominent thinkers who argue that music is nothing more than an evolutionary accident, Levtin argues that music is fundamental to our species, perhaps even more so than language."

So true, and it's usually football that carries the entire sports programs at most high schools.  Football is the one bringing in the money.  Usually other sports are nothing but a drain on the school's athletic fund. If it weren't for TITLE IX, there probably wouldn't be any girls' sports.

Ahmad Bradshaw did a great job in the Giant's game last night. I think it shows what focused energy and determination can accomplish.

"...focused energy and determination." I  don't know him personally, but have heard some interesting stories about him from folks who remember him from his Graham High School days.
