  The Cosmic Symphony

Scientists hope that a new supercomputer being built by Syracuse University may help them identify the sound of a celestial black hole. The supercomputer, dubbed SUGAR, will soon receive massive amounts of data collected over a two-year period at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. While Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916, it has taken decades to develop the technology to detect them. Before they can isolate the sound of a black hole from the data, the scientists must figure out what a black hole sounds like. That's where Einstein's theories come in. Working with colleagues from the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) project, they will create models of gravitational wave patterns from the collision of two black holes.

They need to do something similar with the ocean.  There are areas unexplored.  It is hard to tell what are in them.

The Cosmic Symphony. That title alone was enough to draw me in...but have to admit I did not understand what I was reading... gravitational waves and black holes? So stopped and found my Timothy Ferris book on cosmology and did some catching up. Interesting stuff. BoD, thank you for posting that! libby

I'm with you, libby. "The Cosmic Symphony" piqued my interest too!  I certainly would like to hear what that big ol' Sugar daddy can find.  Could it be the opposite of the music of the spheres? Good news item, Bo D! :bananawave:

I did not understand or appreciate what strides computer science has made until I read it.

Scientists should try to figure out what Gravity is before they worry about the music of black holes. It might be more relevant.
According o the words of wisdom on the last page of Forbes, Einstein said that nothing is more difficult to understand than our income tax system.

Well....thank goodness there are scientists who take the time to stop and listen to the music.

What's wrong, po? You sure are being a grouch this morning.

Grouchy, never. Other than being a little annoyed at seeing a group of self-important lame-brains dictating a policy with no logic behind it on the populace. Imagine, an "adult" going by the name of "Cookie".
I always get a charge out of scientific speculation about useless information, for example, how many billion years the sun will be shining. Meanwhile, one of the most basic observations, the force of gravity, which can be observed and described and affects all of us in a fundametal way,  has no explanation as to the nature of the attractive force.  I'd rather listen to the music on my excellent music system.

I'd like to hear about that system.

Po wrote: "Scientists should try to figure out what gravity is before they worry about the music of black holes."

Scientists are doing the opposite: They're mapping gravitational waves in the hope of figuring out what black holes are. Maybe in the process they'll learn more about gravity.
