Atheist soldiers demand recognition
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:49:14 PM »
Officially, the Department of Defense considers atheism a creed like other faiths. New recruits can choose ATHEIST, AGNOSTIC, or NO RELIGIOUS PREFERENCE for their dog-tag identifications. And an atheist symbol, which resembles an atom, is among the dozens of "approved emblems of belief" that can appear on the headstones of fallen soldiers in military cemeteries.

"There are no Atheists in fox holes"? According to veterans or those currently serving w/out a religious preference, that old adage isn't correct. Thoughts?

Also, why is the "atom" a symbol for a person without religious faith? is it a reference to science?

Just like any other religious or non religious group they have rights.  It is their right to choose their beliefs and we have no right to make judgement upon them for their choice.  Just like Homosexuals they should have the same freedoms and rights as everyone else.  No where does it say you have to believe in God to serve in the military.   These folks are  risking thier lives and dying for our country.  Should they not be allowed to be honest about their beliefs?  As for the atom...well I am not sure  unless it is because of science.

I wonder if they ever recognized the Wiccan symbol for that soldier who died and his family wanted it put on his marker.

That would be a good question for Wiccan Witch. I agree w/Nota I don't recall seeing anything new on it.

It's hard to believe this has withstood the test of evangelism all this time.  I am in hopes it continues and is not attacked.  I hadn't realized the count was that high...but then why not?

But it looks like they will. :)

I hope so. I just think that if someone makes the ultimate sacrifice for their country then they should have any d*mn thing they want on their headstone.

I agree that Athiests and Agnostics and those of no religion should have the same rights in the service as anyone else.  I kind of agree that I can't imagine a soldier in a fox hole with firing all around who wouldn't at least momentarily call out to God, just in case.  I guess I have just never been an Atheist, so I have no way of knowing.  I have a feeling that Athiests and Agnostics and those of no religion have just as good a chance with God as those who belong to religions.  I think it is about behavior more than belief, and you don't have to believe in God to be a good person.
