Old Movies
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:43:29 AM »
Last night the NCIS reruns got so gory I was afraid I'd have nightmares, so I decided to watch an old movie I'd never seen: North by Northwest, a 1959 Alfred Hitchcock mystery  featuring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. It was on PBS, 2 1/2 hours with no commercials. It was surprisingly sophisticated and good. Two strangers met on a train, had sex the first night, and then the action really began. A classy movie!

Some of the old movies are excellent. North by Northwest is good and the acting is excellent. Try watching Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant, How Green Was My Vallet with Walter Pidgeon, or The Ghost and Mrs. Muir with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney.  those are all black and white. A Quiet Man with John Wayne is also excellent and it is in color.

I've seen every one of them, and agree that they are great. I especially liked The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and found an old tape of it in new condition. My all-time favorite, though, from the 70s I believe, was Hopscotch, starring Walter Matthau, Glenda Jackson and Ned Beatty. It was a spoof of the CIA, and the lilting background music was some of Mozart's best.

Have you seen "One Two Three" or The Mouse That Roared"? They were both from the early 60's and I remember them as being really funny.

They sound familiar but I can't remember any specifics. I'll have to watch for them.

I like Sergeant York. That was a good movie. I also enjoy It's a Mad Mad World. I thought Jonathan Winters was great in that one.

Ever see "The Snake Pit" with Olivia De Havilland?
I also loved Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Stalag 17.

The Snake Pit was very powerful but disturbing. I had nightmares for weeks!

How about the old horror movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Blob, and Them! Funny now but scary then.

I think I saw all the John Wayne movies. When I was little I thought he won the west and WWII by himself.

Anyone 'member "Chiller Theater" which came on Saturday nights in the late 60's and into the 70's?
I think those time periods are correct.

You ain't gonna believe this Duke. Gene is still working, at least he was last summer. He was working for NWA on the local circuit, billing himself as the worlds oldest wrestler.
