I have to say I enjoy having the door held for me and when I see a feller close by and he blatantly doesn't hold the door for me, I get a little miffed.  I guess I expect it.  Am I spoiled?

Not in my book your not. I was raised to always do such things for a lady.

All this reminds me of something that happened to me a few years ago in Tennessee. I was on a road trip on my Harley and stopped at a convenience for a drink and a smoke. While sitting on the curb beside my bike a couple came by and started admiring my bike. They were the type I used to call "Harley walkers", you've all seen em, they have the boots, t shirts, biker wallet, you know what I mean, all the trappings but no bike. Anyway, the girl complimented my bike, so I said, why thank you ma'am. You'd have thought I had just smacked her. She proceeded to quickly inform me with a mouthful of obscenities that she was no ma'am.  I still laugh when I think about her.  :roflmao:

Playing devil's advocate here, was the offense taken maybe because of her age?  That she thought you should have called her Miss instead of Ma'am?

I remember when I first started noticing people in general calling me Ma'am instead of Miss.  I realized I was a grown up.

But I don't mind.  Its a term of respect and an acknowledgement of my femininity.  I've sure been called worse!

I agree and I'm teaching my grandson to open the door for ladies and elderly.

The company I work for has two owners. I call Lee Ann "ma'am" all the time even though she's almost 20 years my junior.  :roflmao: It's just how I was raised, I guess.

I call the other owner "Mike". He don't get no respect.  :roflmao:

Could be, the mouthful of obscenity she gave me was what stuck with me. I was taught to use the term ma'am as a sign of respect, but there sure wasn't anything respectful in her choice of words.  :roflmao:
