The finest things I've known in my walk
Are the things I could not hold.
Like the warmth of the sun, loved my face
Closed my eyes, burning, scarred, bold
Things that refused to be held
Like time chased, others marked fast.
Neither in my grip, my mind beheld,
Neither ever willing to last.
Even as a river flows ever on,
The same water rushes out to the sea.
And the things I've loved and ones I've known,
Never side my walk they'll be.
There once with me, I know the place
We walked in agreement a short glimpse of space,
Now our path imagined could not stay,
and the memory fades more with each passing day.
Even had I known the brevity of our spell,
And clinched and gripped tight to the ones,
They'd never have stayed, their stars always fell,
The past teems with their setting suns.
Their blinding brilliance always sets
Or a cloud blows in our way.
and my pockets weigh deep now with regrets
That I'll never revisit the day.
A rainbow, waterfall, the canyon so deep,
All the best things I have known.
Were fleeting or dangerous or wild or steep,
And not one of them was mine to own.
The ones I've loved were always this way,
Cutting sharp as the rock to my core.
Leaving no trace to be seen today,
Behind I

reaching for more.
So the lesson I teach to my student, my soul,
Is all the best things never stay.
Nothing worth holding will I ever hold,
Tomorrow never comes to today.
