Moonglow's Mr. Fix it thread
« on: May 25, 2010, 08:08:29 AM »
We're very honored here at 4seasons to have our own, very experienced "Mr. Fix It" man,  moonglow.  If you have questions about any phase of construction from appliance repair to laying tile or even electrical questions,  post them here for Moonglow.

I'll start.  Moonglow.  I'm laying tile on my front porch which had carpet on it prior,  how to I get the old glue off.  I've tried all the chemicals they sell for such things and they didn't work.  What do you suggest?  Also what type of mortar do you suggest for such a project?

Have you tried WD 40 or graphite?

two ways to relieve the mastic from the porch, scrap it off, or use a chemical to dissolve the mastic. It is sold at Home Depot, or Lowes.

Use type "S" motar mix or exterior tile mortar mix. U can buy it in 10# to 70# bags, the larger bags with a 3 to 1 ratio of sand to mix.

You must look at the tracks and see if they are broken, erroded or worn out.You can bet a new rail at the local hardware store.

That works well also, or liquid wrench

I have tried the WD40 and its a temporary fix for a week or so. Does graphite work any better?

These doors are a non-standard size (two panels but over 8' wide total) and all Ive found so far is a six foot track.

It's concrete.

can you just float a mortar bed over it all then?

Nope,  not enough door clearance to build up any higher.  Problem has been solved with a concrete grinder.  Zipped it off in less than an hour.  Well worth rental fees.

Look for a tag on either the bottom of the door and I mean the very bottom,  have to take it off to find or the side if they we're being nice.  Tags have a manufacturer and model number that may help you find parts.  Tags I have seen are usually gold or silver.

Here is a article I found that may help you if it is just an adjustment.

Good article! That is exactly what I had to do on an old sliding door before I finally replaced it with a nice set of French doors.
