Is there Life after death?
« on: June 10, 2010, 06:22:45 PM »
What happens when we die? Do we go to Heaven or Hell?  Are we ghosts?  Are we reincarnated?  Any ideas?

Here's something to think about ... even if you have no belief in an afterlife.

The atoms that make up your body have existed since they were cooked up in some star somewhere. They will continue to exist ... forever (or at least as long as the laws of the universe allow.)

When you take a breath, you are breathing in some of the same oxygen molecules that Julius Caesar exhaled when he said "Et tu, Brute?" And those oxygen molecules become part of your body for a while.

When you die, the atoms of your body will go on to become a part of something else ... a blade of grass, a tree, a butterfly ....

And so it goes ....

Passing on our dna to the next generation is about as close as we can get.

What about the soul? Where does it go after death? Heaven? Hell? What about the belief by many in karma and reincarnation (we keep coming back until we 'get it right').  As an old friend who knew his days were numbered said to me the last time I saw him, "I don't want to come back as a cockroach!" (He was a lawyer.)

(He was a lawyer.)The reason for karma and reincarnation is the same as heaven and hell. It is supposed to make you think about your actions. Because we dont get caught by our fellow man doing every bad thing we do. But if there was a power that saw it anyway... Its all about society and trying to make people act a certain way.

"What about the soul?"

My post was simply scientific fact about what happens to the materials that make up your body. I made no attempt to claim or deny any connection to anything else.

I know what I believe and nobody on this forum will change my mind.

I have also learned not to share what I believe about spiritual concepts on this forum.

I can only speak my intentions, and I certainly was not trying to trap anyone. I just think it's mind-boggling to think about all the recycling that goes on in nature.

*aac*  Maybe i shouldn't have started this thread but it was intended for serious discussion.  I often do that after talking with someone on a subject.  I have a friend who is a Jehovah Witness and we got into the subject.  So needless to say I brought it here.

Yes! You should have! You seem to always post thought-provoking threads. We always hope for serious discussion, but we often get sidetracked. Too bad.

What if you are wrong? What if we are all wrong and the vikings had it right?  What if there are a heaven and a hell? What if there is only a Vallhalla?  what then?Pascals wager doesnt convince me. The 'what then' can be applied to any religions claims.

What if Islam is the true version of God 3.0?

I bet ya lose no sleep worrying about if  Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Janism, Pastafarianism or any other religion is the one telling the one real truth.

I look at all of the different faiths and say they are ALL probably getting it wrong.

Any revealed truth should be obvious to all people not just certain folks, in certain regions of the world.
IMHO.

So you think there is absolutely no truth to the Bible at all?   :sneeky:

I really like BoD's response and I find it comforting. It's much better than what mine would have been, "light's out, that's it, done".

Although, I'm not sure about a "soul", I've always thought there are people who seem knowledgable beyond their years, as if they've done this before. BoD's response would explain that as well, assuming there's a certain level,  of consciousness even if it's subconscious with the "transfer" of energy.

Perhaps it boils down to not knowing if tales of afterlife are created because people fear dying or because we have subliminal knowledge that this isn't it.
