Too Hot!
« on: July 05, 2010, 09:51:28 AM »
The weather for June here in the Northern VA area has been the hottest on record. That means high 90s many days - with no rain to speak of - there have been occasional brief showers close by, but none where I live. We had about 3 days of less than 90 last week, but yesterday the temperature began inching up again, and today the weather forecasters are talking about 100 tomorrow through Friday, with air quality "unhealthy" but with humidity "not terribly high" and still no rain in sight until maybe Friday. I usually don't pay all that much attention to numbers - because here it seems we go from brief spring to summer (hot) almost overnight. Now, with temperatures this high for June, I wonder what in the world will it be like in August - in my opinion the most miserable month of the year here.

LOL.  I've acclimated, but still dream of cool green mountains in the summer. I grew up in Souhern WV near Bluefield, where they used to serve free lemonade on the street if the temperature hit 90 degrees in the summer. When we first moved here, and lived in a trailer for the first year, the humidity plus the heat in the summer made me feel like I couldn't take a deep breath. We used to drive to the mountains (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away) on weekends, where the temperature was always at least 10 degrees cooler.

I remember one time when the Bluefield paper declared a heat wave after several days of 80 degree temperatures.

Yesterday at BWI airport (only about 45 minutes away from my house) the official temperature was 106 degrees.

And more of the same is on the way today.  It was 80 at 6:30 this morning at my house. *yk*

It's the same over here on the Virginia side of the river. I could feel the heat the minute I opened the front door to get my newspaper. I'm worried about my rock-herb garden out front - the front of my house faces east. There are trees on an island across the street, but they don't protect as the sun gets higher in the sky. So far the herbs and most of the other plants have survived, but I've already lost one small Japanese holly bush.

It's wearing me out just trying to keep the flower borders alive. I have given up on the lawn. It'll come back anyway when the weather cools down. It seems like I have to water the hydrangeas and impatiens every day.

I've been hearing about the weather back there on the news. It's been in the mid-70's here this week. I had a jacket on the other night.

I don't miss the heat and humidity of the east coast.

Sandy, I envy you. Here's our forecast for today:

"We begin to back away from this crazy heat, but if you hadn't just experienced the past few days you'd probably say it's still pretty darn hot. Partly sunny skies hold highs in the low- to mid-90s. Add in the humidity, and you're looking at afternoon heat indices of at least 100."  -- Capital Weather Gang

Predicted temperatures from tomorrow through next Monday: 90, 91, 90, 93.  To quote Bo,   *yk*

 :jealous:

Me, too!  But, at the same time I've been congratulating myself  because back in May, when we had a hot day or two, the fan in my heat pump/AC stopped working, and, remembering what July and August here are like, decided to go ahead and check out the cost of replacing the whole thing - it was the original.  It cost a lot, but it was well spent because I am now savoring every minute of that cool air, especially at night.

My garden is frying, I am roasting and my kids live in the pool! :wavie: :faint:  It is supposed to rain tomorrow! :bananna:  My dance is  working. :sneeky:  We went Fishing Monday and it was too hot for the fish to even be hungry. :roflmao:  But hey the kids had fun until my 10 year old ripped his foot open on someones old rusty fish hook and we spent an hour in the ER.  So then he was hot, mad, scared and anything else you could think of. :faint:

Good times!  :roflmao:

I'm jealous too! I've never been to an ER when I've been able to spend less than 1/2 a day.

This is the first time we have gotten through that quick.  I honestly think it was because it was a holiday weekend.  People tend to hold up going for that.
