kids to private school have done so, basically, not because they think the instruction is better, but to keep their kids away from roughnecks, troublemakers, and kids who just dont take things seriously. They want their kids to be among others who do their homework, are there to learn, and dont require that a teacher give 20 percent of her time to one kid.

Nobody is fooled with that garbage that those kids don't have the same kind of drama in their schools as the public schools.

So...why do you think those students do better as a whole than public school?

You never answered my question, why do the kids do better in private schools?

They don't.

"WASHINGTON, July 14 — The Education Department reported on Friday that children in public schools generally performed as well or better in reading and mathematics than comparable children in private schools. The exception was in eighth-grade reading, where the private school counterparts fared better."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/15/education/15report.html

"Pupils from comprehensive schools are likely to do better at university than children educated at private or grammar schools with similar A-level results, according to research carried out for the government and published today."

It depends on what study you look at...The sequence of analyses comparing all private schools
to all public schools in grade 8 reading yields results
generally similar to those obtained for the separate
comparisons of all public schools to Catholic schools
and Lutheran schools, but not to Conservative
Christian schools. With no adjustment for differences
among students, the average of the mean NAEP reading
scores is higher among private schools (as well as
Catholic and Lutheran schools separately) than among
public schools. When student covariates are included
in the model, all private schools, as well as Catholic
and Lutheran schools, maintain a higher average school
mean than public schools.

U.S. education is midpack when compared against the world and we spend the money on it. But there is one country that is always at the bottom of the pack in education ranking and that is Mexico. And these are the folks that some want to welcome to this country with open arms. Then when you look at the stats on latinos already in this country and their education scores they are at the bottom. How can we "win the future" as Obami says?
