« on: February 01, 2007, 10:22:25 AM »
Would you read the book of Satan?  The  Wicca beliefs?  The  Jehovah's witness Bible?  The Book or Mormon?  The Catholic Beliefs?  I could go on and on....But why or why not?

I doubt it, but only because I prefer  books with a plot.

Except for the book of Satan, which I have never had occasion to read... I have.   As well as The Bhagavad Gita.  I also own books by L. Ron Hubbard, read books about Taoism, Bhuddism and Hinduism.  I have several versions of The Bible, older and newer (translations).  Also have a couple of books about Satanic Witchcraft (not Wiccan Witchcraft, two completely different things!)...

Why?  It gives me a better insight into how other people feel and what their beliefs are based on... giving me a better understanding of "who" they are.    It doesn't change or distract in any way my OWN beliefs or faith. :)

I really miss one of our "adopted" kids back in Cali, he was a devout Mormon and we had some wonderful (and spirited ;D) conversations about religion in general.   He was straightforward, honest and quite patient with all of my questions about Mormonism... especially about the whole 'racism' thing attached to them.

Rather than distancing myself from other faiths, I found that actually reading the texts and asking questions, brought me closer to them.   There is an undeniable commonality among almost ALL organized religions... One that is based on Love, Understanding, and Forgivness.

O have read the bible, the Qu'ran and some Yorah.....I have taken comparative religion classes when I attended, of all things, a catholic boarding school.  It was presented in an unbiased fashion, we actually studied religions.......Unlike what RWC was taught at BJU.  I also studied Islam in college.  I have read some L Ron Hubbard, found it interesting until I met a scientologist and then it scared me off.  I have read some Wiccan, etc.

All of the above, and others as well: The Gospels of the Essenes, The Peshitta (Lamsa Aramic to English bible), other lost "Gospels" from that Dead Seas scrolls that were not included for political reasons in the "modern" Bible, the Book of the Dead, Illusions by Richard Bach (a must read for Comparative Religion students), Tao of Physics and Dancing Wu-Li Masters, and on and on.

Though I am an atheist, I find religion and it's sociological and psychological impact fascinating.

I've read portions of all of most of the books of religion. They are, at times, boring but enlightening.

Primarily I prefer the study of religions, their origins and organization. It's fascinating to me the similarities of all religions - the discarded religions - the associations of current religions with historical ideologies and thought to regional world civilization centers.

It's interesting to see how contact with new cultures influenced religious ideological thought, to observe the variations and similarities of religions with common origins - to discover how common religions create new ideologies using identical texts basing the new ideology on regional practices. And the incorporation of old regional religious texts and practices into the ideology of newly discovered or created religious thought. It never ceases to amaze me how religion, even existing religion, transforms itself over the course of the centuries to adapt to the situations of new generations.

Religion is an incredibly fascinating study of humanities quest for a reason for it's existence. And sadly, is it's primary historical reason for the destruction of competing cultures.

My question is how can those who say no they would not read them, disagree with them?  How can you say the Catholics, Mormons are wrong if you have no clue what they believe?  How can argue/debate  with someone if you truly have no idea what their beliefs are?  If you are basing your beliefs on hearsay...well is hearsay always right?  So in turn should you not read these books to become better educated on their beliefs and trying to understand them?

Why? Because it is simply easier to be a troll. No study (work) involved.

Elicits the desired response w/o the "drudgery" of having to actually learn.

I have read many of these items and continue to read and study...however as always with any topic it is good to have others opinions.   If you are referring to the term "troll"  and sending that my way  ....read my signature line.  I have not claimed to be anything else. :39:
