No chance of that happening, Libby...hey, did you ever visit the Rubber Mallet forum?  I've got three of his books, and they are really fantastic!!!

I can't send PMs or start new topics, so tried to find a computer problem-related thread but ran into problems,so pulled this old one up. Wanted to tell ya'll what happened to me on Saturday night, and wonder if anyone else has had this happen. It was about 11 pm and I was sleepy, but had the feeling I needed to check my e-mail. Had three new e-mails, and they were all from the same sender (on what looked like my bank's letterhead) sent at three different times,  warning me: "We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your (bank name) account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party" etc. "To restore your account access, we need you to confirm your identity, to do so we need you to follow the link below and proceed to confirm your information:" etc.

I recognized it as a scam - it  happened once before, only from a bank I didn't use. This time they not only had my e-mail address but also the correct bank. And I don't bank on-line. By the time I calmed down, I wondered what my chances were of getting to talk to someone at my bank at almost midnight on Saturday night, but knew I had to try. It took about another 20 minutes and listening to a long recording, talking to a person in Florida, listening to another long recording, before I got hold of a real person in the fraud section (in Colorado). She was great. Basically confirmed what I already knew (phishing) and asked me to send the letters to her, then wipe them out of my e-mail (in case they were carrying a virus). I did that
and got immediate responses back (the phishing form letter I was familiar with). Finally got in bed about 12:30 pm. Libby

Since I didn't provide them any personal information, and told the bank fraud people what happened - and gave them copies of the e-mails,my account should be o.k. I do plan to contact the credit reporting bureaus (as Gryphon suggested recently) to make sure everything is ok. That type of scam is in the news here all the time. Sometimes they do it over the phone. If they can get people to "verify their personal information," they have all they need to empty an account. There are crooks everywhere.

Libby This is awful.,....This unfortunately is going on left and right.   Luckily you were smart enough to know what to do.  Many do not.

Libby, you did the right thing. Ive gotten the same sort of emails from so many banks...even when I see one that looks legit from a bank I actually use, I am very wary. (Assuming, probably correctly, that if they send out 100,000 emails on any given banks masthead, they are sure to get a few actual account holders)
I generally will close out that email, and then go directly to the banks website if I there is any chance in my mind that the message is legitimate. NEVER click on links in such emails. I use the same practice with ebay and other similar sites. If there is a need for some sort of legitimate action...all you have to do is go straight to the companies website, and if theres something they need from you, they will have left you a message there. (at least every bank I use has an online message center)
