Thanks lIbby we figured it out....she had had surgery a while back and had been prescribed Loratabs. She didn't take them all. He takes the Loratabs thinking there were his antibiotics.....ANd needless to say...We have the answer to the unsolved mystery. 
That's why my first thought about this was a change in medications. I've seen more people go whacko from meds than anything else. Usually prescribed by doctors. I had one patient go in the hospital and went to visit her and she was so insistent that there were bugs crawling on her wheelchair, I was actually examining it when a nurse walked in. LOL. She also insisted there were birds in the ceiling and a river was running outside her window.
After several of us pointed out that she was lucid when she was admitted, the doctor stopped several meds and it took about a week for her to return to normal.
There's a saying about looking for zebras instead of horses. It's usually something simple like this.
Personally, I would never throw Lortabs away either because around here, you could be lying on the floor writhing in pain and they'd tell you to take Alleve so I don't fault the wife for hanging onto them.
