Rescuing A Pit Bull
« on: June 20, 2007, 06:43:18 PM »
My family is involved in an effort to rescue a Pit Bull today.  My oldest daughter works for the Health Department.  It is her job to find rabid animals and test them, and to quarantine any pets that have been bitten.  So TuPak, the pit bull had finished his quarantine and was ready to go home, but for some reason, his family refused to come after him.  He is a very nice dog, and my daughter felt responsible, since she had put him at the shelter.  They were about to euthanize him if no one came to take responsibility for him.  The one who adopts him has to have a kennel to put him in, as they don't want him tied up.  My son just lost his Pit Bull, and was planning to adopt one from the shelter.  Both my grandson and my daughter are volunteers at the shelter.  TuPak's time will be up tomorrow morning, and the shelter was closed today.  My son had been out of town. The family has been feverishly working to get the pen set up for him so that they can go and get him tomorrow.  I have already been saving tidbits for him from our meals.  I give them to my son when he comes.  Bully, his other dog, loved them. Hopefully, my son, my son-in-law, and my grandson are putting up the kennel now.  I haven't seen him, but plan to go tomorrow when my son claims him.  Suzi says he is a beautiful black and white dog, and seems quite friendly.

He seems to be a good boy,  he looks something like:

Except he has a black spot covering one eye and a few patches of black on his back.  Seemed friendly but is a very big guy,  at least 75-80 pounds maybe more.

Be careful, pit bulls are now listed as the most dangerous dogs in the US.  Do you know that some insurance companies will not allow you to have a homeowner's policy if you own one of the dogs on the "dangerous dogs list".  Nationwide did inspections a couple of years ago checking  policy holders' houses and asking about the dogs living on the property.  Check your insurance.

Yes,  the pitbull is not a dog that will  fit into just any famlily.  I have raised two part breeds,  but never a full blooded pitbull.  The expereience I have had is positive,  however,  I was in a position to provide lots of attention and care in their transition from the pound to my home.  I have found the pitbull to be an extremely smart breed of dog with the downfall of having a very strong "prey drive".  Meaning they may kill small animals such as cats and possibly smaller dogs.  The Part breed I have now I believe is part pit and part dingo and she does very well with other dogs and was able to be introduced to our cat in short supervised visits and they get along very well now with no supervision.  I had to watch the dog I have now very close around children when I first got her but have no problems or concerns with her around children now.
My brother who is adopting this dog,  this is his 2nd experience and he lives in a secluded neighborhood with no children or other pets living in the home  or immediate neighborhood,  so yes,  we are proceding with caution.  As we discussed which of us would be able to care for him,   my brother was choosen because he had no children or other pets in the home.

Here in KY you have to have half a million for insurance to own one of those dogs. They passed it last year in Feb. *sn*

I have a pit bull and you can ask any veternarian, their reputation is misplaced.  There are stupid peopleout there who have raised stupid dogs.  My dog is an 80lb yorkie and is a resuce himself.  It's only been in the last 20 years that their reputation has become so bad and that's because of gang bangers, drug dealers and idiots.

Suzi, I'm aware of this dog, the girl who had him was good to him according to my daughter, they never got his shots though.  I'm surprised they didn't want him back.  I'll have to tell my daughter he's going to a good home.  Also my pit sleeps with my cats...they love him and he loves them.  My grandson who is 2 can play all over him and the only thing Levi does is lick him.

*eek5*  You are?  He seems like a nice guy. He's had his shots now from what I understand.  He's been in quaranteen for 6 months though and appears ready to break out of that place.   :roflmao:

My mixed pit sleeps with my cat to.   :roflmao: :roflmao:

I just got off the phone with my daughter, it is the same dog, it's actually better that the people did not claim him, they had two, one they fought, tupak they did not.  He was not quarantened for biting, he was bitten.  She said he like to crawl up into his bowl when it was empty.  She said the few times she saw him he was very sweet.  The other dog they had was very mean.

Doesn't matter how nice the dog is--insurance  company may drop you like a hot potato for owning a pitbull or any so-called dangerous dog!  Just giving you this info...

Yes,  the story we have on him was that their was a raccoon in the area that he tangled with (once again,  prey drive)  He got bit by the raccoon or suspected that he may have,  anyway the raccoon turned out to have rabies so he had to be quarantined.  It has been 6 months and the pound said never in the 6 months have the owners checked on him by phone or visit,  which to me doesn't sound good.  If it was my dog,   I'd probably become part of the furniture there.   :roflmao: :roflmao:  I'm very glad to hear he hasn't been fought.  He was pretty young when the raccoon bite happened and has doubled in size sense he was at the pound.

I'm sure that can happen.  My situation has passed my insuance company.  My dog is no different that any other poochie,  probably safer than some chiwawas.  0022*  The new dog,  well...we'll have to get to know each other a little better before I can make judgement,  however this is his 2nd pitbull so I would expect that any issues of insurance,   has been researched.

All animals love my son.  By the way, want a giggle?  I was invited to my son's house to wait with him until the shelter people made a  visit to approve his new home.  We wanted to do a cookout, and there was no shade.  My son and son-in-law had put a canvas over part of the kennel, so, since there was no dog yet, we had the cookout under the canvas in the kennel.  It is a nice big kennel, so I think the dog will like it.  By the way, I found out his name is spelled 2 Pak, but my son wants to call him Ludicrus if  he isn't used to his name.  The shelter people were to come today to inspect the kennel, and he won't be getting the dog before Monday.
