Are US christians becoming less moral?
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:50:04 AM »
According to a Gallup poll more than 8 in 10 Americans think morality is getting worse.  Showing a slight increase in the past three years. So if 80% of people think moral values are declining, are they including themselves?

In this most christian of countries,  why do the vast majority see morals as decreasing and isn't it within their control to change this?

Wait! That would mean that you admit that the posters you are talking about are Christians!?

I don't think so. I'm purely guessing but I'd say only about ten to fifteen percent of the posters here are Christians.

*speach*  Of course for accuracy you'd have to do a poll,  but I'd say that figure is way low.

I suspect that Graybeard is right on the mark. Many people fail to live up to my definition of a Christian and immediately criticize me for judging others when I state that their behavior is unchristian. But, yes I do judge others and will continue to do so. I don't associate with those who I consider bad. Like it or not, that is my demeanor, behavior and judgmental action.

Can a tree not be judged by its fruit?  Are bad trees not cut down?  We are told to associate with those who are Christian.  However, there is a biblical definition of what a Follower is, so we must not create our own definitions.  A lot of people think they can live a Christian life without going to church, but the apostle John says otherwise....

Thats a good question actually.
How do we define it? Researchers say that our country as a whole is 80 to 90 percent Christian...what does that mean? 80-90 percent have been saved? Are members of a church? give tithes? even attend church regularly?

To be a Christian one must be born again.  A lot of people blow the question off by saying "oh yeah I am a Christian, I believe in God"  and let it be.  I would say less than fifty percent even have knowledge what a true born again experience really is.  I am not talking about the water gospel (saying you have to be baptized to be considered saved) or handling snakes or rolling around in the isles.  I am talking about a one on one relationship with Jesus Christ.  Few know what that truly is.  I would say eighty to ninety percent have gone to church at some point and want to be considered "good".  Good people go to hell every day.  You must be born again.

Well said. Villian also  spelled it out well on another thread. There is a big difference from answering yes to a poll on whether you're a Christian and being saved. Maybe the question should be have you been born again.

Only 10-15%?  Is this % for those claiming to be Christians or for actual born again (conversion-type) Christians?

I don't go to church but I do believe in God. However my husband has been getting on this out of nowhere kick to go to church. He said he'd like us to go this Sunday.  He asked me how I felt about it and I told him I wasn't sure. I have to find a church I like first. I don't want one that's real big and I don't want one that's too small. *Sighs*

So what is being a Christian? Can you believe in God and not go to church to be one? Or do you have to believe in God and go to church?
