More Proof of Global Warming
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:53:20 PM »

Global warming proof detected

The Earth is absorbing more energy from the Sun than it is giving back into space, according to a new study by climate scientists in the US.

They base their findings on computer models of climate, and on measurements of temperature in the oceans.

The group describes its results as "the smoking gun that we were looking for", removing any doubt that human activities are warming the planet.

"What we are doing now is we are changing that imbalance at a rate which appears to be unprecedented over at least a thousand years "
Gavin Schmidt, Nasa

SCIENTISTS CLAIM FINAL PROOF OF GLOBAL WARMING

POWERFUL evidence for global warming has been discovered by scientists funded by the US Government, demolishing the chief argument of sceptics who deny that the phenomenon is real.

A new analysis of satellite data has revealed that temperatures in a critical part of the atmosphere are rising much faster than previously thought, strengthening the scientific consensus that the world is warming at an unnatural rate.

The Final Proof: Global Warming is a Man-Made Disaster

Scientists have found the first unequivocal link between man-made greenhouse gases and a dramatic heating of the Earth's oceans. The researchers - many funded by the US government - have seen what they describe as a "stunning" correlation between a rise in ocean temperature over the past 40 years and pollution of the atmosphere.

The study destroys a central argument of global warming skeptics within the Bush administration - that climate change could be a natural phenomenon. It should convince George Bush to drop his objections to the Kyoto treaty on climate change, the scientists say.

Tim Barnett, a marine physicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego and a leading member of the team, said: "We've got a serious problem. The debate is no longer: 'Is there a global warming signal?' The debate now is what are we going to do about it?"

The findings are crucial because much of the evidence of a warmer world has until now been from air temperatures, but it is the oceans that are the driving force behind the Earth's climate. Dr Barnett said: "Over the past 40 years there has been considerable warming of the planetary system and approximately 90 per cent of that warming has gone directly into the oceans."

He told the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington: "We defined a 'fingerprint' of ocean warming. Each of the oceans warmed differently at different depths and constitutes a fingerprint which you can look for. We had several computer simulations, for instance one for natural variability: could the climate system just do this on its own? The answer was no.

"We looked at the possibility that solar changes or volcanic effects could have caused the warming - not a chance. What just absolutely nailed it was greenhouse warming."

I would certainly hope so!   :39:

There are so many things wrong with *this* article that it's hard to determine where to begin.  So I'll just mention a couple of items.  Firstly,....taking recent channel 2 corrections and applying them to *your* data to get "corrected" values of *your* data is O.K. if other  channel readings confirm that the aberration in the channel 2 readings are caused by cooling by the stratosphere.  But you *cannot* apply this reasoning, and be assured of the results, to other data collected at other times.  It is scientifically meaningless.  You need to be able to reproduce the conditions of the experiment at the *time* of the experiment.  Since the atmosphere is in a constant state of flux, this condition cannot be attained, i.e. you can't go back in time,... and to attempt to extrapolate back to that time is scientifically meaningless, since you can't reproduce the system.  So you can't really have any confidence in "trends" if the beginning of the "trend" is built on a faulty foundation.
Secondly.....the "scientific consensus" thing.  Nowhere do the proponents of global warming tell you that science is not *done* by consensus.  If it was, there would still be edges to an earth which is at the center of the solar system, all of whose atoms bind to each other with little hooks.  (Each of these ideas was the consensus of the time.  It took a "rebel" to question the consensus.)

One thing that jumped out at me here was a statement that "The models are right."
I've never heard a scientist say something like that.  What they *will* say is that "The model explains our observations" or "The data measurements support the model" or "The model and the data are consistent with each other."

Once you say that a model is "right", someone will come along with a datum that will not "fit" the model.  So you then have to get a new model.  For instance, we once "knew" that atoms were hard, ball bearing type entities with no structure to them.  That "model" worked for about 50 years...until a datum came along which could not be accommodated by this model.

BTW.....we need articles referenced here which are newer than 2 and a half years old....ones which refer to up-to-date results.  Preferably articles by "skeptic" authors or think tanks, etc.  Just as some have a tendency not to believe World Net Daily or the Washington Times, I have trouble with the BBC and The Times.

another BTW....why was Greenland called Greenland?

BTW....

"How did a glacier-covered island get the name Greenland? In Norse legends written in the 12th century and later, it is told that Eric the Red explored the southeast and southwest coasts of Greenland in a.d. 983-986 and gave the country its name because people would be more likely to go there if it had an attractive name."

Anyone who knows about "models", garbage in, garbage out.

Right on, there can be NO consensus in science. Except...in some peoples mind to promote an agenda.
