Blood has value. It is a donation to a worthy cause. Start giving tax donation credit for those who give blood. Perhaps then the blood banks could get their quota. Urgent Need for Blood

The American Red Cross is making an emergency plea for help with its blood supplies. The blood on hand is less than a one day supply.
Red Cross Communications Supervisor Cheryl Gergely says it's the first time the agency has made this kind of plea in the last three years.
Gergely says the Red Cross is below a one day level for all blood types including the most critical of O-positive and O-negative. She says the emergency appeals don't come often.
"We don't like to issue emergency appeals on an ongoing basis, because it becomes a situation where people tune it out after a while. We only do that when certain parameters are met," she said.
Gergely says the Red Cross has not been meeting its collection goals and the 100 hospitals served in West Virginia and five surrounding states aren't getting the blood they've been promised.
"We are not being able to fulfill their orders at 100 percent so I'm sure they're having to make some internal changes," she said.
A number of possible reasons are cited for the shortage. Gergely says it's likely the combination of factors.
"I think the heat has a lot to do with it and school schedules, people getting back into the routine, giving blood becomes a very low priority," Gergely said.
The Red Cross is doing a number of things to get the word out including extending hours at donor centers, sending out emergency information postcards to donors and urging the general public and current blood donors to give.
