Snake handlers are they right or wrong? Jolo West Virginia.
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:22:56 AM »
In Jolo there is a a small Church of snake handlers and Poison drinkers.   They use the Bible to justify this.  Are they right are they wrong? Why or why not?  There was one man who had been bitten 100+ times and never gotten medical attention and lived.  There were over 100 people who have been bitten and died quickly.   Is it God?  Is it stupidity?  Are somes faith stronger than others? you tell me.

They take this scripture very litterly.  I've never actually witnessed a snake handling group,  but everything I've seen on TV,  shows a group from back woods Appalachia at the forfront.  *cryeye*

Mark 16:17-18 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)

 17-And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

 18-They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

I'm unsure of others belief's, however, my belief is that should a poisonous snake bite me a severe medical emergency is in the making and that this situation could have either a fatal outcome or a truly serious outcome. I do not handle poisonous snakes and don't associate with those who follow this practice.

There used to be a snake-handling church just outside of Princeton.  A lot of the members were CBers, as was I.  (This was some 30 years ago.)  I remember one guy's "handle" was "Deadly Thing"...and he told me the origin of his handle.  As time went on, fewer of the CBers were around as they had moved.  I drove by the church one Sunday evening and nearly all of the cars were from Michigan.  "Deadly Thing" said that many of their members had moved to Michigan.  Eventually he disappeared from the scene, and the church changed hands.

I'll bet there's a "snake church" somewhere in Michigan.

If one reads this closely you can see it contains no imperatives, it does not say "go out and handle snakes".  If one is faithly serving God and trying to spread the gospel message, God can and will protect you from anything.  It is never a wise thing to tempt God over anything.

In some cases of deadly confrontation concern for the snake must be shown as a reverse reaction of either viperous hate or unmanageable fright may attack the snake causing it a quick death. I read the post of FTW with sarcasm aforethought with reflection back to another time where mental anguish flourished unabated. No really, I buried our sword months ago, but, I had two swords and hid one for future battle should it occur.

I knew that family. When I was a teenager some friends and I tore down an old barn for the patriarch of the family. He cautioned us to be on the lookout for copperheads around the barn. He said if we were to see any just holler for him and he'd come and catch it. Thankfully, we didn't encounter any.  113#

As far as their church goes, it's OK by me, just don't pass any snakes my way. As for the strychnine, many of us on this forum who were young in the sixties or seventies have ingested small amounts of that, on little squares of paper with cartoons on them, or little teeny pills called microdots, or barrels.   *ele*

It's OK with me.  I wouldn't want to partake.  There's an interesting book on this topic entitled, "Salvation at Sand Mountain".

Is this the one on Brickyard Road?  My Husband was telling me about one there.

 I was amazed to watch them on TV.  But that is as close as it gets for me. *sadd*

No, Junior will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the church he was referring to was in his neighborhood where he grew up. The preacher and his family lived in the holler I grew up in. All that occurred many moons ago. BTW, where is a church located at on brickyard road?

My Husband said it used be there several years back, they have torn it down  due to a catastophe of some kind.
